Getting through a tough winter on the farm
The catchment is dry this winter, and while environmentally some of our native species are ok with that, for farmers, the decisions on farm are made all the harder when expected seasonal conditions don’t eventuate.
To support farmers with understanding what their livestock needs are in dry seasonal conditions, the CMA supported an online information session with Perennial Pasture Systems.
It was presented by Jess Revell who is the principal nutritionist and animal production consultant with Rumenate Livestock Services.
Jess talks about the issues in managing the green drought type conditions being experienced locally during a dry winter, and nutritional requirements for pregnant and lactating stock. Jess also looked at options for livestock management for welfare and production, including strategies like early weaning and supplementary feeding options.
The webinar was supported by Glenelg Hopkins CMA through the Sustainable Agriculture Facilitators are supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Natural Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.
Information used during the webinar is from the PPS Meat & Livestock Australia, PDS.
