Join in the Great Southern Bioblitz in 2024 by participating in the Glenelg Hopkins Bioblitz!

Held between September 20 – 23, the Great Southern Bioblitz is a worldwide campaign to get as much biodiversity across the Southern Hemisphere snapped and logged online.

As part of this, in 2024 we are encouraging people to get involved by participating in a bioblitz in the Glenelg Hopkins catchment area.

How do I get involved?

Participating in a bioblitz is easy – it’s just a matter of taking a photo of any and all biodiversity – plants, birds, fish, reptile, mammals – during the designated time period.

Then, uploading the image to a central database – in this case, the iNaturalist App.

The iNaturalist app is available for both Apple and Android phones

Where do I find the bioblitz page?

Once you’re joined up to iNaturalist, you can join our Glenelg Hopkins bioblitz by locating the page on the app.

You can find this by searching in ‘projects’ or by the name.

What happens if I don’t know the names of what I’m taking a photo of?

You don’t need to know what exactly you are taking a photo of, because the app will suggest a species for you when you upload the image based on colours, patterns, geographic location, time of year, etc.

I don’t want the specific location of my image known publicly!

Depending on where and what you are photographing, its very reasonable you might not want the geolocation of the place uploaded with your image.

This is particularly important if it is on your private property or a threatend species.

If you don’t want the very specific location you have taken the image uploaded, the app has an option for you to make it a general vicinity.
