Moyne River estuary
The Moyne River estuary (including Belfast Lough) is located within and next to the township of Port Fairy. The estuary mouth is modified and always kept open to accommodate the Port of Port Fairy.
North (upstream) of Port Fairy the estuary widens into a shallow open waterbody known as Belfast Lough. Murray Brook and Reedy Creek also flow into the estuary.
The estuary is a valued recreational fishery containing black bream, sea mullet, estuary perch, mulloway, whiting, barracouta, snapper and Australian salmon. The lower portion of the estuary serves as a harbour for commercial fishing boats.
The estuarine salt marshes provide important feeding areas for many migratory bird species and the endangered Orange-bellied parrot.
